Anchers Hus og Saxilds Gaard

The house and studio museum Anchers Hus is the former home of the artists couple Anna Ancher and Michael Ancher. Anna Ancher was the only artist among the Skagens painters, who was born and raised in Skagen. Her and her husband’s home on Markvej was the heart of the Skagen artists’ colony around the turn of the last century.

The building and the interiors still stands as when the Ancher family lived here. It has been preserved as a museum, where you can see the family’s own vast collection of their own and other artists’ works.

The interiors and the artworks in Anchers Hus offer an intimate understanding of the life of the artists couple and the rest artists’ colony’s lives.

The Anchers bought the house in 1884 after the birth of their daughter Helga. At that time the house was only the significantly smaller than today. The home was extended after a design by the architect Ulrik Plesner in 1913 with a new wing for the artists’s studios as well as new family rooms. The sizeable building reflects the success of the artists couple.

In the large garden surrounding Anchers Hus you will find the yellow cottage Saxilds Gaard, which contains smaller, temporary exhibitions about the Ancher family. The café Saxilds Kaffestue is open from mid-April to September and serves freshly baked cakes and food made local produce.
