Bundsbæk Mill

Bundsbæk Mill is an idyllic old water mill well hidden in the West Jutland heath, and in many ways it has been a fulcrum point throughout history.

Bundsbæk Mill was built around 1640, and up through the 18th century, Bundsbæk Mill was sought out by many visitors. In the beginning of the 19th century, aid for the poor was handed out from the mill – mostly to the excluded ‘Rakkers’ from Bjørnemosen behind the mill.

Today, Bundsbæk Mill is a museum, where you get to experience history through reenactments and living history. That means that millers grind flour at the water mill and that bakers fire up the old ovens. There is also an old smithy, which is still in use, and a grand old coffee room, where you can buy refreshments. Moreover, there’s a shop where you can buy ice cream and souvenirs.

Bundsbæk Nature Park and the ’Rakkers’

Bundsbæk Mill is surrounded by a beautiful natural park called Bjørnemosen – the Bear Bog – where, among other things, beautiful orchids grow. Here you can go for a walk in the beautiful landscape and, among other things, see the nature artwork here. You also have the chance to visit the small ’Rakker’ house on your trip through the park.

If you would like to know more about the ‘Rakkers’, visit the exhibition at Bundsbæk Mill or go on the museum’s guided ’Rakker’ tour. See www.levendehistorie.dk for more info.

Living History

Bundsbæk Mill is part of Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum, where you can experience history where it happened. This museum consists of a series of authentic buildings that all tell the tale of the life lived there throughout the ages and how the landscape shaped them.

At Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum, history isn’t locked up in glass cabinets. Here you get to experience LIVE HISTORY with all your senses – history reenactments, guided tours, and activities for kids. With a week or year round pass, you get a discount, by visiting several locations. Kids and teenagers under the age of 18 are free of charge when accompanying an adult. The week pass can be purchased at the different locations, and the tourist information offices in Ringkøbing and Hvide Sande.
