South of Viborg, in spectacular unspoilt landscape, you can visit Hald Lake and walk in the protected Dollerup Hills. To the west of Viborg is Kongenshus Memorial Park, with its impressive moorland as far as the eye can see. The soil is sandy and chalky and lime has been extracted from the areas around Mønsted and Daugbjerg for centuries. The abandoned mines and their network of tunnels are open to the public. If you’re feeling brave, head down into the dark and look for the large bat colonies that live deep underground.
Valleys and gorges
Grejsdalen is a valley northwest of Vejle and Denmark's largest gorge. Walk in this unique scenery, with forest-covered slopes running down to the Grejs River. Close by are more beautiful valleys, such as the Vejle Stream Valley (Vejle Ådal) with great walks and trails.
